Amwell View School and Specialist Sports College has strong links with schools in the local community.
As part of our transition to becoming a sports college we forged links with a local secondary school and three rural primary schools.
• Presdales Secondary School
• Hunsdon JMI School
• Widford Primary School
• Wareside C of E Primary School
This enabled Amwell View to work closely with these schools to provide opportunities for primary schools to use Amwell View’s facilities such as the climbing wall and dance studio. Schools were provided the opportunity to liaise with specialist staff, for example our Dance Coach for advice and at times specialist coaching . Similarly, joint performances were organised with our link and other local secondary schools. Annual competitions involving Amwell View and the three rural primary link schools have been held with all initiatives supported by student leadership. To date we have held an athletics, outdoor and adventurous and three Boccia competitions. The competition is now represented by Middleton Special School (primary) and officiated by Presdales, Amwell View and Pinewood sports leaders and officials.
PE and Sport
In recent years we have worked very closely with the school sports partnership supporting the development of festivals, competitive pathways and student leadership for children with learning difficulties. The value of this partnership and the opportunities for our pupils to work with, compete against and for some of our post 16 students lead was very significant. When the government decided to stop the funding for school sport partnerships back in 2011 Amwell View, Pinewood and Middleton Special Schools made the decision to pump prime a new community sports partnership with a signifcant financial contribution. This decision was made to enable some of the fantastic work that the sports partnership had established to continue benefitting all schools in Hertford and Ware.
We continue to work with Hertfordshire SLD schools through a range of strategic and curriculum enrichment activities. The six schools work together to organise five sporting competitions a year which include Athletics, Boccia, Cricket, Football and swimming. In addition to these events invitations to this to participate in musical and other curriculum events happen throughout the academic year. Amwell View has attended joint INSET (cluster) days with Hertfordshire SLD schools in recent years.
Local Special Schools
We work closely with our local primary and secondary LD schools and create opportunities to share and develop knowledge collaboratively. As mentioned earlier we also work together to develop strategically such as the decision to pump prime a new community sports partnership.
We also have links with both St Andrews and St John the Baptist Primary schools in Stanstead Abbotts, where teachers visit on teacher placement. Pupils from these schools have also visited Amwell View to watch school shows and participate in music concerts.
