Music Therapy

We all respond to music. It affects our minds, bodies and feelings. Music Therapy takes this innate musicality and harnesses it to help people.

Music Therapy can help in a myriad of different ways. For some the benefits are physical, for others they can be emotional, social or cognitive. Music therapy sessions at Amwell View mostly consist of improvised music between a child and therapist on a variety of instruments. Sessions take place in a group or 1:1.

Music Therapy gives children space to express themselves and relate to another person through sound. A musical interaction is developed between the therapist and child thereby giving the child a voice and an experience of being heard. This is particularly useful for children with difficulties communicating because it offers them a way of relating to another person that is non verbal.

During the recent COVID crisis I developed some music activities for children to follow on video from their homes. These are not Music Therapy, but hopefully still useful for providing children an opportunity to explore music at home with only a few simple resources.
